Preparing for Medical School While in High School

Most still in high school are still trying to determine what it is they would like to do for the rest of their lives. However, there are some that feel they are destined for a future in medicine. If this is the case for you, there are several things you can do to get yourself prepared for medical school and beyond.

Classes You Can Take in High School

While there typically aren’t any classes that can specifically get you ready for medical school, learning as much about math and science as possible is highly advised. You can have a leg up once you’re ready to enter college by taking AP course during high school. This is also a time where you can master studying habits, test-testing skills, and other things that will be critical once you enter medical school.

Take Advantage of Extracurricular Opportunities

Students still in high school should take advantage of any extracurricular opportunities that come their way. Students should be on the lookout for the chance to volunteer in healthcare centers, work in a lab, or help with medical research. If you are able to land one of these opportunities, it’s important to try and build and establish a long-term relationship that will stay with you when it’s time to apply to medical school.

Most research and volunteer experiences are available during the summer, making it an ideal time for high school students to be able to devote their time and energy to them.

Keep an Eye on the Future

If you’re in high school and considering a career in health care, perhaps the most important thing you can do is always keep an eye on the future. What you do now can have an enormous impact on what happens in the future. Medical schools vet all applications with a fine-tooth comb, so it’s critically important to avoid circumstances that could harm your future candidacy.

Keeping a clean record and reputation is as important as any class you take or experience you may have.
