The first two years at P&S combine basic sciences,
introductory clinical experiences, skill-building, and physical
diagnosis. The curriculum's depth and strength become evident in
year 3, when students complete clinical clerkships in wide-ranging
disciplines in inner city, suburban, or rural settings. Fourth-year
courses re-emphasize the foundation of medical knowledge and
critical data appraisal. |

Two curricular tracks are offered: 1) An
integrated systems-based curriculum consisting of 3 ongoing
"threads" - a) molecular/cellular basis, b) structural/functional
basis, and c)clinical practice of osteopathic medicine; and 2) a PBL
track, whose cornerstone is small-group, case-based learning. In
both tracks, years 3 and 4 consist of required/elective rotations at
affiliated clinical sites. |

NYU's program encourages self-directed learning.
The pre-clinical curriculum is organized into thematic modules with
small-group, case-based exercises. The clinical curriculum, with 9
core clerkships, stresses interactive, patient-based education;
evidence-based problem solving; and spiral learning, building on a
strong background in biomedical science and a rich, diverse clinical
environment. |

The organ-based curriculum integrates the basic
and clinical sciences - with basic science courses teaching the
clinical implications of the material - and provides clinical
experience starting in the first semester. The organ systems
approach enables an efficient, in-depth study of major concepts. |

Years 1 and 2 of the medical curriculum begin with
an organ-based interdisciplinary core curriculum. Modular lecture
sections focus on organs of interest and their diseases. Students
also attend small-group problem-based learning sessions. Students
get practical experience in the Clinical Practice of Medicine
course. In years 3 and 4, students rotate in the specialty clinical
areas. |
